INFORMATION Technology student Kang Wang has made history as the first Territorian to reach the finals of the Australian Singing Competition.
Mr Wang, 22, said he had very little formal training in music until now.
"I don't have a conservatorium background. I have an unfinished bachelor's degree in IT at CDU," he said. "But I have some elective music units as well."
Mr Wang made it to the finals last month in front of a packed house of music lovers at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.
The final five will compete at the Sydney Opera House on October 15.
"I am the only tenor left, and from what I have been told, it is the biggest classical singing competition in Australia," he said.
"But even if I win, it doesn't mean much. It just means I am a good student."
Mr Wang moved to Darwin with his parents four years ago from China.
Both his parents have training as professional classical singers.
"In the future, I want to focus on my singing career," he said.
